Meeker softball sweeps Aspen in road doubleheader

MEEKER |  Last week the Meeker High School softball team bounced back in a big way last week, sweeping Aspen in a road doubleheader Thursday.

The Cowboys came into last Thursday’s doubleheader after recently losing a pair of games against Cedaredge the weekend before. The last time they played the Skiers was Sept. 28, 2024, when the team hosted them at home and won 15-0 and 14-2. This time around it was Meeker playing on Aspen’s home turf, and the results were pretty much the same as the Cowboys swept the Skiers, winning the first game 16-0 and the second game 32-16.

The 32-run outburst in game two marked Meeker’s highest offensive output of the season.

Head coach Megan Kuper said the shutout win in game one highlighted how sharp her team can be when they stay disciplined.

“Our defense was strong, and we limited fielding errors, which kept Aspen off the scoreboard,” Kuper said. “At the plate, the girls showed patience, drawing walks when needed and coming through with solid base hits.”

In the second game, Kuper said confidence and persistence fueled the Cowboys’ offensive explosion.

“That game went longer than the first, which gave our players more opportunities at the plate,” she said. “With each at-bat, their confidence grew, and that carried over into better approaches and more consistent contact. The extra innings really allowed our hitters to settle in and produce.”

Defensively, Kuper said she was just as encouraged by her team’s communication and decision-making.

“The girls backed each other up, made smart decisions, and played with focus throughout both games, which gave us the consistency we needed,” she said.

The sweep improved Meeker’s record to 4-12 overall and 3-7 in 3A Western Slope League play, where they sit in fifth place.

Looking ahead, the Cowboys return home Friday, Oct. 3, to host Gunnison in another league doubleheader, with games scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Kuper said the key will be carrying over confidence and energy from the Aspen series.

Individual player statistics from the Aspen games were not available in time for publication.

This weekend, the Cowboys will return home Friday, Oct. 3, to host Gunnison in a doubleheader at Paintbrush Park with games scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Cowboys will then celebrate Senior Night on Monday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. against Battle Mountain, honoring #2 Emma Bauer, #4 Jewell McPherson, #20 Autumn Stallings and #21 Addie Knowles.
