Meeker trustees discuss Garfield Street water line project, approve Smith to fill board vacancy

MEEKER | The Town of Meeker Board of Trustees convened on June 3. Along with the manager’s report and monthly disbursements, board members welcomed a new Trustee, acknowledged staff for excellent work, were brought up to date on the Dark Skies Project, and discussed a proposed change to the Garfield Street Water Line project.

The meeting topics began with community member Robert Amick notifying the board on the Dark Skies Project. Amick and the Board discussed WREA’s Dark Sky improvement in Sanderson Hills and Sage Hills areas where WREA has removed the mercury vapor and high pressure sodium lights to be replaced with LED bulbs. Amick plans to continue applying for grants and moving forward with the Dark Skies Initiative.

Town Administrator Mandi Etheridge informed the Board of the unusable fill in the road base found between Third and Sixth streets during the beginning of the Garfield Street project. Etheridge explained that Chris Hale from Mountain Cross Engineering explained to her that the original bid of 1,000 tons had been used up in the month of April. Etheridge encouraged planning ahead by requesting a change order for the fill amount if the worst case scenario comes true and all fill is unusable for completing the project to 13th Street. With contingency funds available to cover additional fill and the project still under budget, the consideration of change was approved. The main line of the Garfield project has reached 13th Street and is ready for service lines.

Amanda Smith, who is currently serving on the planning commission, joined the meeting via phone for the consideration of appointment to Trustee to fill the seat vacated by Tiffany Jehorek. Smith will be sworn in at the next meeting.

Mayor Travis Day, the Board of Trustees, and Mandi Etheridge all thanked Jak Kilduff for his exemplary work and dedication in the public works department.

The Board of Trustees also discussed reported issues from property owners below the 10th Street Bridge, where river recreators have been infringing on private land while exiting the White River. Etheridge assured the Board that Phase Two of the project will include better signage making property boundary lines clear to recreators.
