The fall colors were on display at the Chris Severy Invitational in Aspen on Saturday. The course begins and ends on the fields behind the high school, and uses the adjoining open spaces and trails. A true Colorado cross country course, there are few flat sections, and appropriately for Aspen, the racers run under a ski lift for a short time.
Haylee Steele, Meeker’s only girl to race again this week, kept good form on both the up-and-downhill sections of the course, finishing in 43rd place at 30:33. The boys race found Wyatt Rollins leading the Meeker harriers, with a time of 21:56, for 18th place. Gabe Smithers turned it on in the last half of the race, moving up several places to 30th, in 22:45. Aidan Tapia got his first look at the course, and finished in 24:23 for 52nd. Eddie Drussell was two places behind, in a time of 24:41. Cameron Hanberg was Meeker’s fifth scorer, and ran the notoriously difficult course in 26:52 for a 66th place finish.
