MEEKER I The Meeker High School boys’ basketball team started the New Year with a bang, scoring 136 points in two games and beating two competitive teams.
The Cowboys kicked off against Cedaredge on Friday night, and they came out on fire, running to a 24-14 lead after eight minutes.
The team cooled in the second period, but managed to hold onto a 39-35 lead at halftime.
The Cowboy offense made the game exciting, but it was the team defense and adjustments after half that won the game for Meeker. They came out and held Cedaredge to five points in the third period while scoring 13 of their own,
Meeker finished off the Bruins with a 17-15 final period, giving them a decisive 69-55 win.
Saturday night was a matchup against the always-tough Paonia Eagles, and it looked as though Paonia had done its homework as it tried to control the tempo of the game.
Outstanding shooting by Raul Lopez and Kash Atwood led the offense in a game that found the Cowboys winning by almost 20.
Meeker came out strong on both ends of the court as they took a 16-12 first quarter lead.
The second period looked almost the same as Meeker extended their lead to 33-24 at the half.
Once again, the Cowboys came out of the locker room with the right adjustments as their defense was fierce in holding the Eagles to just eight points in the third quarter.
Meeker finished strong as the final period found the tempo in their favor, leading to a final of 67-49.
The team played well as a team in both games and had outstanding play from several players including Ty Dunham and Jake Phelan.
The team will try to continue their win streak tonight against Hayden, and on Saturday the boys travel to Grand Junction to play Caprock Academy.
