MEEKER | The Cowboys entered the post season at number 20 but due to a league team matchup they were moved up to number 19.
Their ranking sent them to Denver Christian to take on Lyons in the opening round of regionals, a tournament in which only the top team moves on. The 2-1 loss against Lyons was the end of their season.
“The boys went out and competed, we just were unable to string together our hits and they were,” said assistant coach Cody Smith. “It was a good competitive game, but it was a tough one to take.”
Carson Klinzmann started on the mound, pitching five no-walk innings, striking out seven and only allowing two runs.
“Carson pitched really well, but their pitcher also pitched really well and it was a well-played game with good defense on both sides,” commented Smith.
The Cowboys had runners in scoring positions multiple times, in the second the bases were loaded and in the third or fourth Ryan Sullivan had a lead-off double but then was unable to move.
“It was the little things during each inning, Lyons was able to make the plays and we have to give them the credit,” said Smith.
Spencer Gates hit an RBI to bring home Ethan Quinn, that accounted for the one run for Meeker.
“Both sides were crushing the ball, but the outfielders were doing their job and that is the way the game goes sometimes,” commented Smith.
The Cowboys finished the year with an above 500 record.
“I think our strength this year was our pitching,” commented Smith. “Our hitting came and went; it would be nice to see more consistency, and our defense continued to improve all year.”
There were no seniors on the Cowboy roster this year, which means they will be returning all of their starters.
“I think maybe Lyons is in a similar situation, they only had one senior on their bench, and Denver Christian only had a couple,” said Smith.
The Cowboys have not formalized anything at this time for summer ball.
