MEEKER | Five games into the season and the Meeker Cowboy basketball team is 2-3. The most recent game against the Grand Valley Cardinals, another non-conference game, ended with the Cowboys in a 10-point deficit, 48-58.
“The speed affected [us] early,” said Head Coach Klark Kindler. “Once we adjusted we played much better.”
The score was 30-21 in the Cardinals favor at the end of the first half, but the Cowboys stepped up and kept it nearly even in the second half. Stephen Walsh and Brennan Jensen each put up double digits on the evening. Offensively the team is shooting 33 percent and averaging less than 10 points in each of the first three quarters.
Defensively there were 23 rebounds, accounting for 65 percent of the total. The Cardinals had 30. This is the first year for all of the boys who are starters to be starting, and the entire varsity team has not played with this combination of teammates.
“We will work on shooting the ball better over the Christmas break and look forward to the league schedule starting in January,” Kindler said.
North Park, the first conference game of the season, will travel to Meeker on Jan. 5 in a varsity-only matchup. Games for boys and girls begin at 4 p.m.
