The Cowboys set a goal to dominate and they are getting it done.
Senior Jonathan “JT” Fitzgibbons, leading in rebounds and field goal percentage, said, “Since the last time we faced Olathe, we have been dominating with our scoring abilities, setting the goal to finish each game by halftime and force any team to chase us for the rest of the game which we demonstrated this weekend.”
The Cowboys played their final regular season home games last weekend, beating Gunnison 65-33 and Cedaredge 59-43.
Senior Jace Mobley had 18 points against Gunnison and 17 points against the Bruins.
“I feel like we are getting better with every game,” said Mobley. “Compared to the beginning of the year it seems that we are a lot better at scoring and playing with confidence.”
Mobley also pulled down 15 rebounds on the weekend and is leading the team in total points. For his career he has 757 total points and is knocking on the 1000-point mark.
The Cowboys improved their win streak to 15 wins and are very close to the longest win streak in MaxPreps history.
“I feel that the team as a whole has been able to come out strong and maintain momentum until the end,” said Fitzgibbons.
“It is getting easier to figure out what to do regarding certain teams play style and I think staying consistent with where we are will be the biggest challenge moving forward,” commented senior Ryan Sullivan. “Our biggest strength is having a level of conditioning that allows us to outrun most teams.”
”Our biggest strength is just linking in with each other and playing with confidence,” said Mobley.
Sullivan scored 32 points on the weekend and is leading the team in assists. Other significant scorers were Ethan Quinn with 17, Drew Drake 16 and Jacob Simonsen with 16.
Meeker now turns its attention to the final two games of the regular season with Central on Wednesday, Feb. 14 and North Fork on Saturday, Feb. 17.
“I think the matchup with their height and skill is a close one, but our determination to overcome them and reach the state championship will not be matched,” commented Fitzgibbons.
“Our challenge is going to be Central and North Fork will also be a good game,” said Mobley.
The road to state is through districts and then regionals.
“We aim to secure home court advantage for regionals this year and plan on sealing the deal next week at districts,” said Fitzgibbons. “This has been a great final year, breaking two records in high school, and we don’t plan on stopping. We knew coming into this year that we would have countless strengths to help us go far, but the two biggest ones are teamwork and team unity that we possess, along with the never-back-down spirit we all show.”
