MEEKER | It is a tough season so far for the Meeker Cowboys basketball team. Going into week two after the break they were 1-5 and not ranked in the top 25.
This last weekend brought them their second win of the season in Walden against the North Park Wildcats. Dominating the last three quarters of the game Saturday, the scoring was led by senior Cole Rogers who had two 3-pointers and with his other goals scored 32 points. Lane Anderson, the only other member to break double-digit scoring, had 15 points.
“We struggled early,” said head coach Klark Kindler, “We were one for eight in a our first quarter free throws, and when we started making them in the second quarter we also got better at attacking the basket and shooting, and I am hopeful this win will build some confidence.
The team is now 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the league. They were defeated at home on Friday by the West Grand Mustangs 45-39, which makes them even for league play. Ahead 31-28 at the end of the third quarter, they couldn’t keep up the scoring in the fourth and allowed too many points by West Grand. Once again Rogers led the team with 20 points, 12 from three-pointers, and Spud White had 11. In the end it came down to free throws and some loose balls that the Cowboys couldn’t recover.
“This was a good league game, and two teams on the court that played hard,” commented Kindler.
This weekend they will host Caprock on Friday and travel to Vail Christian on Saturday.
