MEEKER I The Meeker Cowboys boys’ basketball team won two of three games over the weekend and nearly beat a highly competitive Hotchkiss team.
The boys began their weekend Thursday as they played Hayden, and the Cowboy defense limited almost all scoring for the Tigers. The first eight minutes found the Cowboys up 15-2, and 26-3 by half.
The Cowboys were led in scoring by Zack Dinwiddie with 13, Doak Mantle with 11, Jerrick Garca added nine, Logan Hughes added five, and Kale Burke and Gavin Garr each added three.
The team played Caprock Academy on Friday and came out on fire as the first quarter score was 25-3 in favor of the Cowboys.
Meeker never looked back and won the game 66-22 behind the outstanding offensive play of Kash Atwood with 19. Doak Mantle added 11 as Eli Newman and Logan Hughes each added eight.
Nine MHS players scored and the team played outstanding defense in the game.
Saturday’s game was against a solid Hotchkiss. and Meeker proved they were ready for the competition. They ended the game down by six, but they played right with the Bulldogs for thirty-two minutes.
Hotchkiss came out hot at home outscoring the Cowboys 17-8, but Meeker fought back outscoring the Bulldogs 15-8 in the second period, closing to 25-23 at the half.
The third quarter found Meeker making all the right adjustments as they prevailed 23-17, setting up an outstanding final period. Meeker fell short in the end, but they had outstanding team play.
Logan Hughes led scoring with 18, followed by Kash Atwood with 12 and Doak Mantle and Zack Dinwiddie with five each, Eli Newman had six and Jerrick Garza had four.
The Cowboys proved once again that they are gaining offensive weapons as the season progresses.
