MEEKER | A fantastic start to boys basketball as the Cowboys are halfway through this COVID regular season and are 4-1.
The Cowboys took the court in Aspen last Thursday and were down 16-10 by the end of the first quarter.
“Aspen had a good defense and shut down what we were trying to do,” said head coach Klark Kindler.
Number 35, Spud White, sank 20 points to lead the Cowboys in scoring and rebounded seven just behind Ryan Phelan’s 10.
Aspen had two big quarters in the first and the third where they were able to pull ahead far enough the Cowboys couldn’t make up the points. The final score was 56-44.
Saturday in Soroco the team opened up well. “We outshot them 19-5 in the first quarter,” commented Kindler. By half the score was 30-29 and the Rams had closed the gap. “They closed our lead,” said Kindler, “but we finished strong.”
In the third quarter the teams remained even in scoring, 20 all. The fourth quarter the Cowboys pulled ahead, by limiting the Rams to just seven points and scoring another 20. The final score was 70-46.
Three Cowboys put up double digits: White with 26 points, Ryan Phelan with 12 points, and Ethan Drake with 11. Once again Phelan and White led rebounds with Drake and Liam Deming, who combined, pulled down 35.
This week the boys’ and girls’ will travel together to Hayden and then both will play at home on Saturday. Games begin in Hayden at 4 p.m. and then Saturday at home they start at 1 p.m.
