MEEKER I Aspen High School hosted the Chris Severy Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 6 and the Cowboys were on the course for all four races. Clouds shrouded the nearby peaks, but the rain stayed away during the competition.
“Aspen is a tough course, and a good challenge for any runner,” said head coach Marty Casey. “I saw a good effort from everyone, and better times—improvements of two to four minutes— from this course last year.” The JV girls’ race had Alana Nielsen finishing in 31st place, at 34 minutes and 03 seconds and Lacey Ford, the next to cross the line, at 34:39. Zach Harman was the only male JV runner, coming in 35th with a time of 31 minutes flat.
Varsity girls followed, and Briar Meszaros ran a 26:06, for 20th place. The boys’ race saw Ashdon Seibert first across the line for the Cowboys, taking 41st place at 24:21. Owen Hannemann ran a 25:01 for 46th place and Shane Kobald was right behind him at 25:04 and 47th. This was the freshmen’s first time on this course. “They had their first taste of the Aspen hills and performed well,” commented Casey. Meeker’s fourth and fifth team finishers were Damon Dade and Josh Dinwiddie, across the line in 56th and 57th, with times of 28:45 and 28:53, respectively. The Cowboys scored ninth as a team.
Homecoming week finds Meeker cross country running at the Rifle Creek Golf Course on Thursday, their last meet before regionals on Oct. 19. Races in Rifle begin at 4:40 p.m.
