MEEKER I Cowboys softball had a change of venue Friday after a large storm moved through the region, but Saturday they were back on their home fields. The weekend ended up split, losing both to Delta, but run-ruling Aspen in just three innings in both games.
Friday the games went 4-9 and 0-10 the Panthers and Saturday 24-1 and 27-1 the Cowboys.
“Once again there was continual strong leadership at the mound by pitcher Hailey Knowles,” commented head coach Brianna Williams.
Knowles had 17 strikeouts for the weekend and was a top hitter for the team alongside freshman Vivian Brown and Ryan Mergelman.
Tuesday, hosting at home once again to full stands, the team split their double header against Basalt. In game one the top of the seventh the Cowboys were down by three with Basalt up to bat. With two outs and a runner on third, Basalt sent it to center field, fielded by Brown, she connected with Emma Knez ending Basalt’s at bat. The Cowboys ended up going three and out in the bottom of the seventh and game one ended 8-5 Basalt.
Game two the team turned it around, another strong pitching game by Knowles, the final score was 18-3.
The 6-8 Cowboys have two games remaining in the season, a double header taking on Montezuma-Cortez at home on Oct. 3.
