Meeker | In an odd twist of fate, the 2023 Meeker Mustangs opening game was played by Meeker Black vs. Meeker Gold. “The fifth and sixth grade team had such enthusiastic registrations that it became necessary to form two teams for just the second time in Mustangs history, commented organizer Chris Lockwood.
In the interest of fair play, coaches held a draft after a few days of player assessments and came up with two evenly matched teams.
True to Meeker’s sterling reputation for sportsmanship, the game was contested with integrity and grit with the Gold team victorious.
“The true winner is still the entire Mustangs family, said Lockwood. “A great learning experience and start to the 2023 season.”
The younger third and fourth grade Mustangs had a bye week for week one. Coaches conducted a practice and intra-squad scrimmage at Starbuck Stadium to help the boys get ready for next week’s game. All Mustang teams travel to Parachute next week for games beginning at 10 a.m.
“Please come on down and support these hardworking sportsmen,” said Lockwood.
