Prior to the start of the Mustangs season, enthusiastic registrations made it necessary to form two teams for the 5th/6th grade Division 2. Coaches had a couple of days of skills assessments, then held a draft with each team choosing players in an alternating fashion. For just the second time in their storied history, Mustangs fielded Team Black and Team Gold.
“Through hard work, dedication and exemplary coaching, both these teams earned the right to play in the postseason Super Bowl games held last weekend at Glenwood Springs High School,” commented Mustang coordinator Chris Lockwood.
Mountain West Youth Football league officials could not remember having one town represented in both games.
Team Black took the field first against a determined Aspen squad. A soggy back and forth, very close game saw the Aspen team taking home the third place trophy, with Meeker receiving a hard earned fourth place.
A well-prepared Team Gold team played New Castle in the championship Super Bowl. Team Gold played tough and steady ball taking an 18 point lead into halftime. New Castle made some adjustments and came back firing on all cylinders. Moving the ball well, New Castle was able to score the winning touchdown with just 18 seconds on the clock.
“The championship game was an epic battle between two well-coached teams that will be remembered for years to come,” said Lockwood.
The Division 1 3rd/4th grade team had a great year as well. Coach Obie Deming reports that he will be sending several solid football players up to D-2 next year.
“Players, coaches and parents alike should be proud of the 2023 season,” commented Lockwood. “Hard work and sportsmanship brought home two trophies and continues the strong Mustang Pride tradition!”
