MVB event for young entrepreneurs June 24

MEEKER | Young entrepreneurs will have an opportunity to learn about business basics while they make some summer cash next Friday, June 24. Mountain Valley Bank is sponsoring a lemonade and cupcake stand event in their parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids from 5-12 will run their own stands.

The event is a pilot project for Mountain Valley Bank. Participants will learn about budgeting expenses and income, lending, product pricing and inventory, customer service, marketing, savings and more.

“Mountain Valley Bank is proud to participate and invest in the financial education of our youth with Lemonade Day. We hope to see you there,” said bank president Tawny Halandras.

Carson Cook, 7, got her first glimpse into the business world helping her mom, Katelin Cook, sell nail wraps and handmade signs. In her second grade classroom her teacher set up a class store for students to buy and sell items, furthering students’ understanding of business skills. Carson, for her part, has clearly caught the entrepreneurial spirit.

“We’re going to put Sam’s Club out of business,” she said with confidence.

Carson and her dad, Deloy, are building a mobile “Sugar Shack” she’ll be able to use again for future business ventures. She and her mom found a recipe for fresh-squeezed lemonade on Pinterest and tested it out on family members. “It’s grandma and grandpa approved,” she quipped. Supplies—from cups to postcards for marketing to syrups for flavored lemonade—have been ordered, and Carson is planning a “trial run” of the Sugar Shack prior to the event to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Registration is open as long as space is available. Kids can sell lemonade, cupcakes, or both. To register, visit Mountain Valley Bank at 400 Main St., or call 970-878-0103. MVB will provide a budget worksheet to keep track of expenses and income, and the worksheets will be collected after the event for a chance to win prizes. The bank will also match up to $20 for kids who put their profits in a MVB savings account.
