What if you brought that “vacation feeling” home?

I had an epiphany while waiting for my triple shot Americano to fuel me through a Tuesday. The door to the coffee shop was open, revealing an early summer day with a bluebird sky and a light breeze. It was lovely. For a minute I just stopped to take it all in, and suddenly felt like I was on vacation — in the middle of a workday.

When we’re on vacation we pay close attention to the sights, sounds and smells, memorizing every detail with all our senses. We’re mindful and present and aware. And then we go home to the familiar and we forget about the conscious awareness and appreciation that makes vacations so enjoyable.

As author Sir Terry Pratchett wrote, “It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it’s called Life.”

Stop and smell the roses, or the coffee, and take in your surroundings for a minute today.

What we’re reading…

This caught my attention last week. It’s a long read, but the story is fascinating and slightly terrifying. “This is an inside, yet almost accidental, story about how an American fugitive who sought asylum in Moscow has become a key player in Russia’s global disinformation network.

And for those of you who remember journalist Susan Greene from the officer-involved shooting story in 2019, here’s her latest piece from Israel, where she has been on assignment since January 2024.
