According to information released by the Bureau of Land Management, the Piceance-East Douglas Herd Management Area wild horse gather has concluded as of Aug. 1, 2022.
A total of 867 horses — 319 stallions, 383 mares and 166 foals — were gathered. Of those, 41 stallions have been released, and 761 horses are being processed in temporary holding facilities. A group of mares are being treated with temporary fertility control and should be released back into the herd management area within 30 days. The remaining horses will be shipped to Utah.
Reportedly, six animals died as a result of pre-existing or chronic conditions. No sudden or acute deaths have been reported.
Appropriate management levels for the 190,000 acre herd management area is between 135-235 horses. It’s estimated there were at least 1,385 wild horses prior to the July gather.
