RANGELY | The Rangely Panthers high school cross country team had the weekend off this past weekend, instead running the Uintah Invitational on Wednesday. The course was fast and just 3 miles as opposed to the typical 5K, circling through the grass of city park in Naples, Utah.
The five lady Panthers were again led by junior Mary Scoggins, who navigated the course in 20:22 to place fifth overall. For the first time this season, the Panthers were able to race all 11 harriers in the same race with Andrew Dorris leading the crew. Dorris finished in 23rd with a time of 18:30.
“I feel that the team is progressing well. We have a lot of work still to do, but we are in good shape and will be a team to watch when it comes to regionals,” said head coach Beth Scoggins. The Panther distance squads will have an opportunity to continue their success at home this weekend, hosting the first cross country meets in Rangely in more than 15 years. The team will host two meets, a JV and a varsity meet, with running starting on Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Some of the top teams on the western slope are expected to be in attendance, as well as Uintah High School from Utah. The athletes will be racing at Cedar Ridges Golf Course and are hoping to have a lot of support.
