RANGELY | Rangely School District Re-4 is reviewing the cut-off date for kindergarten and would like your input. Currently, to enter kindergarten, a student must be 5-years-old on or before Aug. 15 of the school year.
Why consider the move? There is research indicating that the youngest kindergartners are about five times more likely to be retained, or held back, compared to the older students (Hurst, Nathan, University of Missouri, March 2014). There is also research completed by Kelly Bedard and Elizabeth Dhuy that shows that the youngest in a class are less likely to go on to college. Along with personal experiences and some feedback from our constituent’s, the district believes it is reasonable to discuss if an earlier start date would be of value to our students.
