MEEKER | Join the Rio Blanco County Historical Society for a traditional May Day event on Sunday, April 30 in the White River Museum courtyard beginning at 2 p.m.
The celebration of May Day has roots that extend back to the 14th century in Ireland and Scotland, with a festival celebrating the coming of spring, the blooming of the flowers, and the rebirth and renewal of all living things.
The festival was revived in the early days of colonial America in the 19th century with the same intentions, and as a way to bring everyone back together again after a long and lonely winter. Does that sound familiar? With this in mind, we hope everyone will emerge from their dens and join us for the first event of the spring.
We will be hosting an array of events, with something for everyone to enjoy. There will be dancing around the Maypole, fresh-made snacks for purchase including cotton candy and kettle corn, a booth for you to grab your May Day basket of flowers, and an afternoon of family-friendly games, including a father-son wheelbarrow race, three-legged races, and potato sack races. There will also be a log chopping competition, open to anyone 18 and older, so bring your ax sharpened and ready to swing.
And of course, with any spring festival, someone should be wearing a crown. Please help us to crown our first May Day Queen by nominating who you think would be the perfect queen. We will crown the winner at the event.
Throughout the event there will be a silent auction of homemade pies donated by local bakers; if you are interested in making a pie for auction then please contact us and we will make arrangements with you. This is a fundraising event, with all the proceeds going to the White River Museum. Don your sundresses and come celebrate the arrival of May.
Contact RBCHS secretary Emily Mohr for more information, questions, queen nominations, or to donate a pie. [email protected] or 970-930-5619 (call or text).
