MEEKER | It was a busy weekend for Cowboy football. The team hosted its annual Cowboy Kickoff Classic on Friday at the Meeker Golf Course and it was another record year with teams outnumbering the amount of golf carts available.
Golfers finished just before a big rainstorm brought everyone inside to bid on the silent auction items and learn three teams were tied for first place. The plan was to have a “golf off” but the rain had a different idea and the teams flipped for first. Footballers Skylar Browning, Landon Lopez, Finley Deming, and Jackson Slade took first place.
The fairly new cornhole tournament also had record participation of all ages. Duo Ron Kelly Crawford and Clay Crawford took the tournament, demolishing the teams in their way.
Meeker hosted a preseason scrimmage on Saturday, preparing for the real games which begin this weekend. Scrimmages allow the coaches to be actively involved on the field while assessing team dynamics and adjusting player positions.
The season begins this Friday at 7 p.m. at Starbuck Stadium when the Cowboys take on the North Fork Miners. Volleyball will also be hosting the Miners and softball will be hosting Battle Mountain. It will be a busy day for Cowboy fans with so many athletes competing.
