MEEKER I Meeker golf hit the greens hard after a small break during Labor Day with three tournaments in seven days.
“Without a doubt the boys are fun to watch,” commented head coach Willy Theos; continuing, “The team has improved, they all did; the scores have improved regardless of the course, they’ve come down considerably and consistently.”
On Sept. 9 the team traveled to Craig for the Moffatt County Invitational. “We have always stayed about the middle of the pack for team scores,” Theos said. In Craig they placed fourth. Craig was the first tournament of the year that the entire team was able to travel and play the course.

Two short days later the Meeker Golf Course hosted a Meeker and Craig dual.
“I’d really like to thank Becky Ridings and her staff for hosting the dual and their amazing support of high school golf,” Theos said. “Also, Parts City—McGuire Auto Parts and Lamb Soap Company for sponsoring the lunch for both teams at the dual as well.”
The dual format was a little different then most tournaments. Two players from each team battled head to head; the top two from Meeker played against the top two Craig and on down the line, for a total of six teams on each side. The best ball tournament ended with Meeker winning 5-1 and taking the tournament.

In the final tournament of the year before regionals Hightower, Hanks, Garcia, Phelan, and Sullivan played in Vail at the Vail Valley Golf Club Invitational.
“As a team placing once again about middle of the pack in a tournament where there were a lot of 4A schools, that is a success,” said Theos, “we are a 3A school but that is only because there is no 2A golf.”
The final regular season tournament Hightower played the best round on the team with a score of 88. Hightower is a junior at Meeker High School and golf has helped him find some normalcy “it has been a hard year but with golf around it definitely helped out a lot,” he said.
Golf isn’t an individual sport in practice and in a sense during a tournament, but the kids come together as a team and Hightower said his “teammates and coaches make everything much more fun and when you feel good you play good.”
