Resilient Cowboys eye rebound against Basalt after 1-8 start

MEEKER | The Meeker High School softball team endured a tough weekend on the road, dropping four straight games in doubleheaders against Delta and Montezuma-Cortez. The Lady Cowboys now stand at 1-8 on the season.

On Friday, Meeker opened its series at Delta. The Cowboys scored once in the first inning of Game 1, but the Panthers responded with a run in the second and then broke the game open with eight runs in the third and four more in the fourth. Delta went on to a 13-1 win, dropping Meeker’s record to 1-5.

“While the scoreboard didn’t always go our way, there were definitely positive moments,” head coach Megan Kuper said.

In the nightcap, Delta shut out Meeker 15-0 to complete the sweep and push the Cowboys to 1-6. Despite the final score, Kuper emphasized the importance of learning from each outing.

“We want our players to understand that every game—win or lose—is a chance to learn,” she said. “Staying composed under pressure, taking care of the fundamentals, and supporting one another are all lessons that will make us stronger as the season goes on.”

On Saturday, the Cowboys traveled to Montezuma-Cortez, where their offense showed more life in the first game. Meeker erupted for six runs in the second inning and added scores in the fourth, sixth and seventh. But Cortez plated eight runs in the first inning and continued to add on, pulling away for a 19-12 win.

“Our hitters came out with a strong approach at the plate,” Kuper said. “We were aggressive early in counts, and players trusted their swings. The confidence carried through the lineup, and when one person found success, it seemed to spark the next.”

In the second game, Cortez sealed the sweep with a 15-4 victory. The loss extended Meeker’s skid to six games and dropped its record to 1-8.

Meeker will look to regroup this Saturday in Basalt, where both the Cowboys and Longhorns enter with 1-8 records. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Game 1, with the second game set for 1 p.m.

“Our practices will emphasize consistency—both at the plate and in the field,” Kuper said. “We remind the group that our record doesn’t define us—it’s about progress and growth. The younger players are developing every game, and our experienced athletes are setting the tone and leading the way.”

With a renewed focus and steady improvement, the Cowboys head into the weekend hopeful for a fresh start and an opportunity to get their season back on track.
