From the Grand Junction Sentinel: “More than 300 wild horses have been gathered from lands in Rio Blanco County and nearly 200 of them shipped to a Utah holding facility, now that operations to reduce their numbers have ramped up with the start of a helicopter-assisted roundup Friday (pictured above.)
The Bureau of Land Management on Monday reported on its website that as of Sunday, 310 horses had been gathered, including 57 foals. Of those, 190 horses, including 41 foals, have been shipped to the holding facility in Axtell, Utah.” Read the Sentinel’s full report at https://bit.ly/3Oo3IQi
The BLM White River Field Offices manages the Piceance East Douglas Herd Management Area. The appropriate management level of horses in the area is between 135-245 wild horses. Conservative population estimate is currently at 1,385 wild horses. The drive/trap gather will continue “until complete with the goal of returning the herd management area to within the appropriate management level.”
