MEEKER | Brianna Williams, head coach for Meeker Cowboy softball, is in her fifth year coaching high school softball in Meeker; this is the second group of seniors she has been with since they started high school, the first group that will hopefully make it to state with her for a fourth trip. As a coach she has an overall record of 54-36.
There are seven seniors this year Mckenna Burke, Madison Kindler, Sarina Goedert, Brynlee Williams, Lorena Martinez, Matilda Brown and Jadyn Archuletta; in total there are 18 girls out. Cowboy fans will see a few new faces this year with the incoming freshmen and some new additions to the coaching staff.
Returning to her staff are Chris Williams, Eric Brown and Tom Knowles. The Cowboys have added pitching coach Kendall Bergman, who played college softball in Utah. “She is bringing a lot of energy to the field,” said Williams.
Kicking off the season the team will travel to Eaton Aug. 30-31. “This is a great opportunity for us to get a look at the teams on the Eastern Slope, many of which make it to the state tournament and are major contenders,” commented Williams. The games for the tournament have already been posted, Meeker will take on Northridge first, followed by La Junta then Lamar. Both La Junta and Lamar qualified for state in 2018; the Cowboys eliminated Lamar in round one and Strasburg, who went on to win state, dominated La Junta 16-1.
2019 is a new year, with new girls, new combinations, and “the girls are getting ready to bring it,’’ said Williams.
The Cowboys will have a two-week break until the next game on Sept. 14, where they travel to Gunnison.
There will be five home matches this year, the first, a varsity doubleheader, Meeker will host Basalt on Sept. 17 with the first game to begin at 4 p.m.
