In a shortened season due to COVID-19, the Cowboys ended the year 8-8 overall after two wins in Delta to Montezuma-Cortez. This season, with this record, would have historically found them in the playoffs, but with the new playoff format designed by CHSAA they just missed them for the 2020 year.
“We wrapped up the season with two more wins against a big school, the Cortez Panthers,” commented head coach Briana Williams.
The pitchers dualed in the first game with Meeker’s Hailey Knowles; Cortez averaged only four batters per inning in the opening game. Junior Mykayla Wille led the offense scoring two runs and driving in two others.
“It was the final inning that claimed victory for the Cowboys with great hits by Wille and freshmen Emma Smith and Ryann Mergelman,” said Williams. Meeker won game one 5-4.
In game two “it was another battle to the end of the game,” Williams said. “Offensive production shining from Emma Knez, Mergelman, Vivian Brown and Macy Ridgeway.” The Cowboys won 11-9 in five innings, wrapping up the season on a high point.
