Volleyball season underway; 225 spectators allowed this weekend

MEEKER | The long awaited volleyball season has begun. Of all high school sports so far, volleyball has been waiting the longest to get to play. A season, which normally begins in August, finally was able to begin official practice March 8.

“We are all so excited,” commented head coach Greg Cravens, “The girls have a lot of energy and there is a lot of excitement to be back in the gym again.”

There are 31 girls out for the Meeker 2021 team. This year’s seniors are Sophia Goedert and Kelsay Atchely who are joined by seven juniors, eight sophomores, and 14 freshmen.

The first games are upon us, Friday the Cowboys host Caprock in their brand new facility, with C teams beginning at 4 p.m. and then Saturday another day of home games as the Cowboys host Paonia, JV to begin at 1 p.m.

Joining Cravens as coaches once again are Kaylene Turner and Clea Steerman, and new to his team this year, but not new to the court is Roxy Chintala.

Last Saturday Rio Blanco County moved to level blue on the COVID dial, and that opened some exciting possibilities for Cowboy fans. The gym is now able to host 225 spectators that are above and beyond players and essential personnel. Fifty tickets will be given to the visiting team, which leaves 175 tickets for Meeker Cowboy family and friends. Also new to volleyball is that the ticket is good for the entire evening and the gym will not be cleared between events.
