Weather upsets home meet schedule for Meeker track

MEEKER | The weather was uncooperative for the Cowboys to host their only meet of the year, so instead they packed up and went to Grand Junction for the Mickey Dunn Invitational.

Meeker was coming off of spring break and head coach Hallie Blunt said “I was really excited about how hard the kids worked after break. Last week had some hard practices in bad weather and they did not complain, they just worked, and this will pay off for them.”

The girls relays were once again very competitive with the larger schools, with the 4×200 meter relay took second. The relay consisted of Ellie Hossack, Jayde Turner, Adi Selle and Ainsley Selle. The 800 sprint Medley Relay ran by Natalie Kracht, Reese Clatterbaugh, Taylor Garcia and Braylin Raley also did well, placing sixth. Addie Knowles was the only individual girl to place in the top six, she threw 29 feet five inches and placed sixth.

“Coach Dana Pollock came up and helped our pole vaulters and it showed in Sam Hightower’s new personal record,” said Blunt.

Hightower jumped ten feet three inches, placed sixth and is currently qualified in the event for state.

Judd Harvey was the other individual placer, who took third in shot put throwing 45 feet two inches and was shy of his personal record.

“John Strate is helping more with our kids and between him and the other three coaches, our kids are improving every week.

To qualify for the state meet you must be ranked in the top 16 and there are a number of relays and individuals that are qualified.

“The qualifications change a lot from now until the end of the season, but it’s good to know they are where they need to be to start,” commented Blunt.

The team will be in Grand Junction at Stoker Stadium again this coming Saturday.
