A fireworks display was launched from the old Meeker Elementary School property in downtown Meeker to mark the end of the town Christmas tree lighting contest and the second annual Parade of Lights on Friday evening. The events were sponsored by the Meeker Chamber of Commerce, Pioneers Healthcare Foundation, Meeker Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Meeker High School and the Meeker Girls’ Choir.

In addition to the parade, students from the Meeker Girls’ Choir performed Christmas carols, the Town of Meeker’s Christmas tree was lit in front of the Rio Blanco County Courthouse and a brief fireworks display was presented.
Winner of the “It’s a Wonderful Life” Best of Show Award was the Pioneers Medical Center float; the “Clark Griswold” Brightest Float Award was presented to Meeker Sand and Gravel; and the Santa’s Elves Choice Award went to the White River National Forest Blanco Ranger District float, complete with Smokey the Bear. These four friends, from left to right, Doris Walters, Mickey Riegel, Dorothy Chappel and Ann Mortensen, braved the elements in downtown Meeker on Friday might to take in the Meeker Girls’ Choir caroling, the lighting of the Meeker Christmas tree, the Meeker Parade of Lights and fireworks.
