Free veterans’ flu shot clinic Sept. 27

RBC I The annual veterans’ walk-in flu shot clinic will open Monday, 9 a.m. at the Grand Junction VA Medical Center. The clinic will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon, and 1–4 p.m. throughout the flu season. The medical center’s satellite clinics in Craig, Glenwood Springs, Montrose and Moab, Utah, will begin their walk-in flu shot clinics next week but have different schedules. All veterans are highly encouraged to get their annual flu shot, said nurse Cindy Dearden, flu shot coordinator. To assist those veterans who can’t make the regularly scheduled clinics, the medical center will also hold two drive-through clinics, Sept. 17, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. and Oct. 1, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., she said. “In addition, we have Sept. 27 set aside as ‘Flu Shot Day at the VA’ for the medical center and will have extra staff on hand that day.” That clinic will run 9 a.m.-7 p.m.The VA Medical Center tried “Flu Shot Day at the VA” last year and it was an overwhelming success, Dearden said. “We think it was because it gave people a solid day to put on their calendar.”Veterans with a latex allergy should tell staff prior to getting the flu shot so nurses can take special precautions.Veterans who choose to use the drive through clinic are asked to bring proof of veteran status and wear short-sleeved shirts.
