Lady Cowboys two for two after tourney

MEEKER I The Meeker girls’ volleyball team started its season well, playing in the extremely competitive Glenwood Springs tournament consisting of five pools made up of teams ranging in classification from 2A to 5A.
Meeker coach Christy Atwood said, “We had a great weekend, it was a great starting place for us, we were eager to get on the floor and play after three weeks of practice and this tournament made us elevate our play and rise to the challenge. It let the girls see where they can be.”
The team was two and two on the weekend but the two losses came to four and five Class A schools. The Cowgirls beat Moffat County after falling in the first game 19-25 and coming back to win game two 27-25 and finishing the match with a 15-6 final game. Next on the schedule was with 3A team Roaring Fork. The first game was extremely close as Meeker certainly challenged the bigger school before losing 22-25. Roaring Fork would go on to win the match in two games. The host team was next for the Cowgirls, and the 4A team from Glenwood Springs is always tough. Meeker lost in the first game 14-25 but again showed a ton of heart coming back to win game two 27-25. Glenwood won the deciding game three but the match was a great measuring stick for the Lady Cowboys.
The final match was against a league team and Meeker took care of business winning in two games 25-17 and 25-22. The coaching staff and players were pleased with the weekend overall, realizing there is a great deal to gain from playing tough competition, the 16-team tournament was an extremely challenging test but the girls proved they will be a team to reckon with this season as they came out 2-2 and won their league game.
This weekend offers yet another challenge, as Vail Christian comes to town. The team has been extremely competitive in previous years and Atwood says, “Their team is well coached and will be ready to play when they step on the floor, our girls will have to have their A-game.” It looks to be an exciting match on Saturday with games at 2 and 3 p.m.
