Meeker No. 2 is No. 1 in Northwest Colorado League

Meeker No. 2 8-10-year-old baseball team. Back row: Coaches Sandy Scherbarth, David Scherbarth and Jason Chism. Middle row: Garrett Frantz, Codee Woodward, Logan Hughes, Zachary Dinwiddie, Josh Dinwiddie, Hunter Gregory and Daylon Nielsen. Front row: CJ Wangnild, Zachary Chism, Chris Scherbarth, Stephen Walsh, Uri Goedert and Estevan Barreno.
MEEKER I By name, they were Meeker 2. But based on wins, they were No. 1.
The top-seeded 8-10-year-old team in the Northwest Colorado Baseball League finished the season as champions of their division.
Meeker 2 completed the regular season with a 6-2 record to earn the No. 1 seed in the league tournament last week in Craig.
“Teamwork got us the first seed and teamwork got us the championship,” Meeker 2 coach Dave Scherbarth said. “I’m proud of how the kids progressed during the season.”
Meeker 1, which gave Meeker 2 one of its losses, was defeated by Cook Chevrolet in the first round of the league tournament, and it was Cook Chevrolet that Meeker 2 beat 3-0 in the championship game last Thursday night.
“Our defense did not allow any runs to be scored in the tournament,” Scherbarth said of the team’s three wins.
Meeker 2 defeated Rehab Services of Craig 13-0 in the first round in the field of nine, then defeated Big Kahuna Coins in the semifinals 4-0.
Meeker 2 scored the winning run in the first inning of the championship game, after Logan Hughes batted in teammate Garrett Frantz with an inside-the-park home run. Hughes scored again in the second inning on a hit by starting pitcher Chris Scherbarth for the final run of the game. After that, Meeker’s pitching took over.
Hughes relieved Scherbarth on the mound in the third inning of the five-inning game. Hughes struck out eight of nine batters to secure the championship for Meeker 2.
Meeker’s 11-12-year-olds were the Northwest Colorado Baseball League’s host team last week. Meeker defeated Peroulis Brothers of Craig 13-9 in the first round, but lost to Elk Run Inn, also of Craig 2-3, before being eliminated 15-9 by Peroulis Brothers in the consolation bracket.
Meeker has two 13-15-year-old teams that will combine into one for the league tournament to be held Friday and Saturday in Rangely.
