MEEKER I The Meeker High School boys’ basketball team finished the week with three big wins. The Cowboys began their streak Tuesday night against Rangely, beating the Panthers 65-52 behind a balanced scoring attack led by senior Jeremy Musgrave with 20 points.
Raul Lopez added 14, Dylan Mobley had 13, Ty Dunham had eight, Matt Frantz added four and Joe Newman had three on the night.
Meeker jumped out to an early 19-15 lead but went into the locker room trailing by one.
The Cowboys came out on fire in the third quarter, scoring 23 points and holding Rangely to 16. Meeker held off the late run by the Panthers and took their momentum on the road to Kremmling on Saturday.
In Kremmling, Meeker had a great first quarter, taking the lead 14-10 against a very tough league opponent. Meeker had a four-point lead at the half, but both coaches made great defensive adjustments as the two have met countless times over the last decade or more, and the game remained Meeker up by four going into the final minutes.
Both teams found ways to score, but Meeker was two points better in the last eight minutes and finished the game up, 63-57.
Kindler said, “West Grand was a nice conference win for us. We made plays down the stretch and made 11 of 12 fee throws in the last quarter.”
The team was once again led in scoring by Musgrave with 21, Mobley had an outstanding game adding 17 points, Raul Lopez scored 16, Frantz had three and Dunham and Newman each added a bucket.
The Cowboys’ final game of the week was at home against North Park, and although they seemed to come out flat, they still took an a 15-9 first-quarter lead. They stretched the lead to eight by half and then had a scoring explosion in the third quarter, outscoring North Park 23-3.
This gave the Cowboys a comfortable lead and they finished ahead 62-36. Lopez had 21 on the night, Musgrave added 17, Mobley had 14 and Newman had five.
Coach Kindler said, “We had a good third quarter to put the game away.”
This was a very important week for conference play and the Cowboys proved they will be in the hunt once again this season. They are getting great offensive production out of several players and their level of play seems to improve each week.
