RBC I Ask pretty much anybody about the economy in 2011 and they’ll tell you it has been a rough year, even for the government. For the third quarter in a row, reported revenue from sales tax, motor vehicle use tax, and construction and building material use tax continue to be lower than 2010 numbers.
For the third quarter of 2011, Meeker reported a 25 percent decrease, from $408,883 in 2010 to $306,374 in 2011. That’s an improvement from the 32.9 percent reduction reported in the second quarter of 2011.
The county’s sales and use tax numbers were also down, from $1,500,068 to $1,042,256, a 30.5 percent drop from the third quarter of 2010.
The only bright spot in the report comes from the town of Rangely, which has defied the trend and enjoyed increased sales and use tax revenues all year. For the third quarter, the town of Rangely reported $328,783, a 17 percent increase from 2010’s third quarter revenue of $279,979.
The three combined entities total for the third quarter was 23 percent lower than last year, decreasing from $2,188,930 to $1,677413.
Sales and use tax receipts include collected taxes for retail sales, motor vehicle use tax and building materials use tax.
