The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
• Sulphur Creek is now dry. Last year it had running water all season. But this is an off season.
• With the completion of the Lost Creek Ditch the Coal Creek mesa region will be supplied with an abundance of water.
• Lou Corbin, 25; Roy Buzick, 35; and William Calwel, 30; are all dead at Hayden after an overindulgence in “bootleg” whiskey, topped off with pure alcohol, and winding up with hair tonic. At last election, Hayden voted out the saloons, and of course, has been “dry” territory since then.

The Meeker Herald — 75 years ago
• Mr. Rube Janes and Lora Wasson were united in marriage the first part of this week, County Judge John E. Wix officiating.
• Carl Witherell and Ruth McAlary were married June 21 at St. James Church.
• Last Friday C.C. Craig and Mr. and Mrs. Earl LeBranch of New Castle came across to Meeker via the Buford-New Castle road. They had to break out a number of snowdrifts to make the trip.

• A divorce action was filed in the Rio Blanco District court by Minnewa Bell Roosevelt. Mrs. Roosevelt is suing Elliot Roosevelt for divorce. There have been rumors for over a week that Elliot Roosevelt had secured a Mexican divorce and married a Phoenix, Ariz., girl. Roosevelt has made his home at the Rolling R Ranch at Buford since his marriage a few years ago to Minnewa Bell.
• The new Wilson A&W Drive-In built on the lot between the Chevron Super Service and Stanley Harp Filling Station on Market Street opened for business last weekend.

• The Meeker Fire Department was called out to the Dry Creek fire twice this past week.
• Cake decorating contest winners: Keri Allen, Kristi Nay, Mandy Jensen, Deanna Davis, Annie Davis and Brenda Overton.
• Top honors in this year’s 4-H Dress Revue included Trina Stout, Kati Wood, Julie Tobiasson and Jenni Lake.
• Rowdy Atwood and his roping partner, Joel Kidd Prall of Carbondale, won the Colorado High School Roping Association team roping title, qualifying for the national finals in the process.

• Sarah Hopkins and Bill Sandras, lifeguards at the Rangely pool, keep sharp eyes on the young swimmers every day.
• Marie Borg joined the prizewinners of the Rangely Times’ subscription contest and received a transistor radio and case.

• Half of Pollard’s mobile home park was approved for occupancy.
• At the Campus Theatre: Bill Murray in “Meatballs,” Roger Moore in “ffolkes” and Burt Reynolds and Catherine Deneuve in “Hustle.”
• Skip and Denise Smuts welcomed home their new daughter, Ashley Elizabeth, born June 24 in Vernal, Utah.

• State Rep. Scott McInnis of Glenwood Springs is the leading candidate for majority leader, second most powerful job in the Colorado House of Representatives.
• Rev. Don Gorham is the interim pastor of the First Baptist Church.
• Rangely teens journeyed to the Great Northwest as part of a Young Life group. Paula Phillips, Abby Russell, Brian Newland, Noel Crown, Roger Rowley, Mark Elliot, Guy Gresham, Pancho Flores, Doug Hurm, Ruth Henderson, Cori Ducey, Ken Hinz, Jeff and Alina Matrisciano visited Washington state, Vancouver, B.C. and the Canadian Rockies.
