BUFORD I The White River Community Association (WRCA), which has preserved and now maintains the rural Buford School upriver, is putting on its dancing shoes and graciously inviting the community to be a part of recreating history and supporting another rural school.

Letter to the Editor: Buford Fish Fry was a huge success

Dear Editor: The 2014 White River Community Association’s Fish Fry this past Saturday was a tremendous success. With the help of some very dedicated folks, we were able to serve crispy fried white fish and delicious side dishes to about 250 attendees.

Buford School benefit fish fry…

Members of the White River Community Association served up potatoes, other side dishes and salads for the more than 200 people who attended the Buford School benefit fish fry on Saturday at the Buford School, alongside County Road 17 about 20 miles east of Meeker. The funds raised go toward upkeep on the school, which is listed on the Colorado Register of Historic Places, having been built in 1889 near what is now Lake Avery.

What the White River Valley and Bel Air, Calif., have in common

The Buford school house was donated by Minewa Bell Roosevelt (wife of Elliott Roosevelt) to the White River community in 1953, in memory of her father, Alfonso Bell. Bell not only owned a significant amount of land in the White River valley, he founded the prestigious Bel Air community in California. Today the school house is used by the White River Community Association for their annual fish fry.
