YBA teams wrap up season

Front row Brynlee Williams, Hailey Knowles and Kelbe Collins. Middle Sierra Gomez, Sophia Goedert, Regan Mobley, Aspen Merrifield and Sarah Kracht. Back coach Patti Merrifield, coach Tom Knowles, coach Holly Knowles and team manager Addison Knowles. The Knowles’ team went undefeated this season.
MEEKER I The young basketball players from Meeker completed their season on Dec. 15 and 16 with a tournament for all the teams involved. Meeker had one third/fourth grade team in the tournament and two fifth/sixth grade teams. The league was made up of several teams from Rifle, some from New Castle, Parachute, Debeque and Meeker. The season began with games in Rifle, followed by a weekend of games in Meeker. The next Saturday found them back in Rifle, then to New Castle, Debeque, Parachute and finally ending again in Rifle for the finale. This equated to approximately 11 games for each team and great court experience.
Front row Tori Lasker, Meagan Shelton, Caleigh Morlan and Lila Klinglesmith. Middle Kirsten Brown, Karlee Nielsen, Matilda Brown, Kenzie Turner and Makenna Burke. In the back are coaches Kellie Turner and Hallie Blunt. Turner and Blunt’s team lost in the tournament’s semifinals in what Blunt called a “nail-biter.”
The ERBM had nearly 30 kids involved in the program, with all the athletes seeming to have a great time and improving throughout the season. Both fifth/sixth grade teams advanced out of the first round of the tournament, with Leif Joy’s team advancing to the finals. Kellie Turner’s team was defeated in a nail-biter in the semifinals against the would-be tournament champions. Tom and Holly Knowles’ third/fourth grade team had

an undefeated season, demonstrating outstanding play and constant improvement along the way. With this type of court time for the young kids, and the involvement in the program, the future looks very bright for Meeker girls’ basketball. Thanks to all the parents who hauled their own kids and others to all the games, and for supporting the teams in an extremely positive manner.
