Meeker girls win another pair

MEEKER — The Lady Cowboy basketball team won two more games last week, including a league game against Vail Christian at home last Saturday. Meeker also hosted Hayden Tuesday, in a non-league game and will play in Colbran Friday, before hosting South Routt County (Soroco) this Saturday.
Meeker pounded Roaring Fork 64-23 and beat Vail Christian 56-29 to improve its record to 9-2.
“The girls’ press worked early and they got the tempo where they wanted it,” head coach Hallie Blunt said. “Everybody played and a lot of them scored.”
Meeker jumped out to a 16-5 lead after the first quarter with seniors Janae Kindall and Marki Cook scoring seven and six points respectively.
Senior Sydney Cook scored all of her six points in the second quarter and junior Stacey Fitzgibbons made four of her five points in the same eight minutes of play. The lady Cowboys took a 37-12 lead into halftime and in the third quarter, Roaring Fork only made one basket, compared to Meeker’s 11 points, including two three-pointers from senior Rachel Smith.
“I was pleased with the defensive effort the whole game,” Blunt said. “They put a lot of pressure on them.”
Marki Cook scored eight more in the final quarter and finished by leading all scorers with 21 points. Kindall, also finished in double digits with 14, Smith added eight, while Meg Nieslanik and Morgan Neilson each added four and Kelsey Kendall two.
Meeker’s defense was also key in the victory over Vail Christian, as Meeker led 18-5 after the first quarter and 30-14 at halftime.
“We had little trouble scoring in the first and third quarters,” Blunt said. “They (Vail Christian) packed them in the paint and slowed us down with our post but we got a lot of points off our defense.”
Marki Cook and Kindall each finished the game with 13, while Sydney Cook added 12. Nieslanik finished with seven, Smith scored four, Kendall three and Megan Ridings two.
Meeker will host the Soroco Rams this Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
