BMS tracksters do well

Barone Middle School seventh-grader Halle Ahrens proved she has speed and can jump as she won the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles last Saturday in Craig. The BMS track team will end their season this Saturday in Steamboat Springs.
MEEKER I The Barone Middle School tracksters participated in a large meet in Eagle Valley Saturday and certainly saw a great deal of competition. Several members of the team set personal best marks making the day a fun-filled success. Official results have not been acquired yet but at midday the eighth grade boys were leading the meet and the seventh grade girls were in the hunt for first.
The day began with sprints and Halle Ahrens proved she has speed to reckon with against any competitor, winning both the 100-meter hurdles as well as the 100-meter dash. Kinzie Burke was second in the hurdles with Peyton Burke finishing fourth in the event. Loran Casias was a close second in the 100 dash, three-tenths of a second second behind Ahrens. In the eighth grade boys’ division, T.J. Shelton ran an incredible race, winning the meet and setting a new school record of 11.91. Devon Pontine finished fifth with a time of 12.60. In the 200-meter dash, T.J. showed he could hold the distance winning the race with a time of 25.31with Dillon Frantz in second with 26.18.
The seventh grade girls’ event also had Meeker kids placing with Reese Pertile finishing third and Loran Casias two tenths back in fourth place. In the 400-meter dash, Peyton Burke ran a solid 1.10.78 to finish third among seventh grade girls.
The relay teams represented Meeker well with the eighth grade boys’ team of Dillon Frantz, Tom Chitwood, Devon Pontine, and T.J. Shelton winning the event with a time of 49.97.
The seventh grade girls team also brought home first place with their team of Peyton and Kinzie Burke, Reese Pertile and Halle Ahrens. The seventh grade boys’ team of Casey Turner, Cole Brown, Tell Blanke and Sheridan Harvey finished fifth overall. The meet did not have the 800-meter relay but did run the 800 medley event, where the eighth grade boys’ team of Devon Pontine, Jacob Nielson, Dillon Frantz and Sam Nieslanik finished second. The seventh grade boys’ team of Hunter Garcia, Cole Brown, Cody Nielsen and Josh Cochran finished fourth. The seventh grade girls finished third with their team of Julia Eskelson, Loran Casias, Reese Pertile and Maggie Phelan. The eighth grade boys also fielded a competitive mile relay team of Dillon Frantz, Robby Jensen, Nick Burri and T.J. Shelton finishing fourth overall. The field events were limited to only the shot put, high jump, and long jump in this meet, with no discus or triple jump competitions. Noah Overton won the shot put in the eighth grade boys division, and Sam Nieslanik was second in the long jump for the eighth grade boys. Kinzie Burke won the long jump in the seventh grade girls with a jump of 13-8 and a personal record. Cole Brown finished second in the long jump for seventh grade boys and this rounded out the individual placings for the team.
The meet provided a different format and an opportunity for the kids to compete against new teams. Coach Casey said, “Our kids competed very well against some large schools. It was nice for them to compete against kids they have not seen all season.” The team will travel to Steamboat this weekend to wrap up their season with another exciting meet.
