MEEKER I Meeker High School’s volleyball team is in full swing headed into their season opening tournament in Glenwood Springs this weekend.
Coach Atwood said, “We have a good turnout of 28 girls and we are looking forward to getting on the floor.”
The team scrimmaged against Moffat County last Saturday. The pre-season scrimmage went well for the team and a film session revealed areas they need to work on and strong points to build on as they begin their 2012 season.
“We had great ball control for this early in the season,” Atwood said. She talked about the team’s preparation for the season and said, “There is passion in the gym that there hasn’t been in the last three or four years in all the girls from seniors to freshmen.” She is excited about what lies ahead for the team as they are led by six seniors: Bailey Atwood, Kaysyn Chintala, Kacey Collins, Jordan Brown, Amanda Kindall and Katie Dinwiddie.
With a great deal of experience on the floor the Lady Cowboys are eager to test their game against the competition ahead. “Historically this league has had three or four tough teams and it looks that way again,” Atwood said.
With Paonia, Vail Christian and Rangely all looking to be competitive again this year, the Lady Cowboys look forward to a fun, extremely busy season, hoping to find themselves in the hunt for post-season play. The Glenwood Springs tournament is always a tournament to find out exactly where you stand to start the season. This year, along with the bigger schools competing, league mates Hayden, West Grand and Rangely will also be there. The tournament will certainly give the girls a great start heading directly into league play the following week against Vail Christian. The girls are excited as is their coaching staff, Christy Atwood and assistants Stacey LeBlanc and Roxie Chintala. Weekends will now tell the tale for this new journey for MHS volleyball.
