MEEKER I The Meeker High School boys’ basketball team continued their winning streak in league play with wins over Debeque and Plateau Valley over the weekend.
Friday against Debeque, although they came out a little sluggish, it didn’t take the Cowboys long to find their stride.
“The team did a good job of taking control in the second quarter,” said coach Dupire, who is filling in for head coach Klark Kindler. The team controlled every aspect of the game and maintained their tempo, leading to a 79-40 victory. Several players contributed to the win, with nine finding their way into the score book.
The Cowboys were led by Jeremy Musgrave with 18, followed by Dylon Mobley with 10, Nate Walsh and Alex Smith added nine each, Scott Smith had eight, Jake Phelan with seven, Raul Lopez had six, Joe Newman with five, and rounding out the scoring was Stefan Cochran with four points.
Coming off a great offensive performance, Meeker followed their defensive game plan nearly to perfection holding a traditionally tough Plateau Valley team to just 33 points Saturday. The Cowboys from both towns are known for their defense but on this occasion Meeker won the battle, nearly doubling their opponent’s score 63-33.
“We came out and played well from the opening tip. Defensively we made them earn everything they got,” Dupire said. The Cowboys once again found even scoring to be a key to their success, led by Musgrave and Scott Smith with 14 and 13 points respectively. Raul Lopez added 11 and Alex Smith contributed eight points and several rebounds to the win. Nate Walsh, Jake Phelan and Dylon Mobley provided great defensive efforts along with adding six, five and four points respectively to the Meeker total.
Things certainly look good for the Cowboys going forward. They will have their head coach back and look to keep their streak alive as they continue their league play this weekend. With an even offensive attack and tenacious defense, they create challenges for any opponent.
