BMS track team completes record-setting season

MEEKER I The Barone Middle School track team completed a very successful season with two meets in the past week.
The Thursday afternoon meet saw great weather on the track below the picturesque mountains. The setting was perfect for several of the Meeker tracksters’ last meet as many had to miss Saturday’s meet in Craig due to state history competition in Denver.
Another school record was broken by eighth-grade girls Peyton Burke, Maggie Phelan, Julia Eskelson and Reese Pertile, who teamed up to run a 2:05.36 time in the 800 medley relay, breaking the previous record of 2:06.80. They were certainly not the only meet winners as the entire team had a great afternoon.
Beginning with the seventh-grade girls in each event, Avery Watt, Sierra Williams, Josie Drussell and Riley Pertile came away with top three finishes in several events.
For the seventh-grade boys, Doak Mantle and Logan Hughes were second and third, respectively, in the 100-meter dash and Jerrick Garza and Mathew Beck did well building toward their final meet.
The eighth-grade boys found Sheridan Harvey winning the 100 dash and teaming up with Cole Brown, Tell Blanke and Hunter Garcia to win relays. Casey Turner won the discus and Chase Rule and Tanner Slaugh jumped and threw to top finishes as well.
Clay Anderson placed in the mile as did seventh grader Christopher Strate in the 800.

The eighth-grade girls swept events like the 100- and 200-meter dashes with Halle Ahrens, Madison Russell, and Loran Casias finishing at the top, and Maggie Phelan, Julia Eskelson, and Peyton Burke cleaning up in the 400-meter dash.
Kinzie Burke suffered a season-ending fracture to her collar bone in the hurdles but she was leading the race at the time of her fall. Reese Pertile won the 800-meter dash while Maggie Phelan placed. The entire team saw many personal bests in the meet and it was a great replacement meet for Meeker.
On Saturday, the team traveled to Craig for its final meet and it was a great way to end the season.
Avery Watt won the 100-meter hurdles while Josie Drussell finished fifth.
The seventh-grade girls swept the relay, winning all four with their hard working teams. Sierra Williams was second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 200 while Riley Pertile was fifth in the high jump.
For the seventh-grade boys, Doak Mantle won the 100-meter hurdles and teamed up with the 400 meter relay team to win the meet. The medley team was second and the mile relay team finished third. Jerrick Garza was second in the high jump and Logan Hughes won the triple jump.
The eighth-grade girls were very shorthanded but still managed to win the medley and the 800-meter relays behind the speed of Madison Russell, who also won the open 100-meter dash while Loran Casias won the 200-meter dash. Peyton Burke won the 400-meter dash and was second in the 100-meter hurdles.
Reese Pertile won the 800-meter dash, taking four seconds off her previous time. Caroline Copeland was fourth in discus for the eighth-grade girls.
The eighth-grade boys won the 800-meter relay as well as the 800-meter medley relay, and they were second in the 400-meter relay. Sheridan Harvey finished second in the 100-meter dash while Cole Brown won the long jump and was second in the 200-meter dash.
Clay Anderson was fifth in the 400-meter dash, Chase Rule was fourth in the shot put and high jump and Tanner Slaugh finished with a long jump of 27 feet, rounding out the top placers for the team.
The Cowboys had a very successful season behind the coaching of Heather Burke, Marty Casey and Teresa Anderson.
“The kids did a great job this year, and we were very proud of their accomplishments over the season,” Burke said. “They managed to break all the eighth-grade girls’ relay records and were hundredths from several other school records. The kids improved every week and their hard work paid off.”
