Lady Cowboys play for conference championship

MEEKER I The Meeker High School girls’ basketball team won another league game Friday night, not only securing a home game for district tournament, but they will be playing for a bye in the first round.
Meeker will play Paonia this week, a team they have beaten in Paonia earlier in the season. The game will determine the conference champion.
The lady Cowboys came out to a 10-point first-quarter lead in Vail, up 20-10 after eight minutes. They went into intermission leading 32-20, and had a huge third quarter, outscoring their Vail opponents, 19-3.
Meeker never looked back and won, 67-40.
Aly Ridings led all scorers in the game with 20, followed by Sydney Hughes with 13, Taylor Neilson with 10, Piper Haney with eight, Deena Norell and Reese Pertile with six, and Megan Parker and Jamie McLaughlin each had two.
Neilson led the team in rebounds with seven on the night, followed by Haney with five.
Meeker traveled to Baggs, Wyo., on Saturday and took control early, up 27-21 at half. But foul trouble took its toll, and Little Snake River ended the game winning by one.
Meeker looks ahead to putting themselves in great position for the post season. The lady Cowboys have played well all season, and that has them one game away from their second consecutive league championship.
The seeding is important going into the district tournament and even more important as they enter the regional playoffs.
Meeker is in the state rankings and in the running to be playing deep into the post season.
