MEEKER I The Cowboy baseball team finally got to play on their home field April 7. Battle Mountain came to Meeker for a JV/Varsity double header.
“The boys played well and the bats started working,” commented assistant coach Dylan Mobley. “I think we played better this game then we did against Monte Vista the week before.”
Damek Chintala took to the pitcher’s mound for the Cowboys and pitched a solid four innings, with six strikeouts, no walks, and only allowed two runs. Jonathan Fitzgibbons took over to finish out the game the last three innings and the Cowboys won 5-4.
“We have a good lineup of pitchers and with the hitting coming around I think we have a chance for postseason,” said Mobley.
The scoring was evenly spread between John Hamption Hightower, Liam Deming, Jake Blazon, Ryan Sullivan, and Zach Simonsen. Fitzgibbons helped two of them make it home and Simonsen batted in another.
“To date we have not played a team in our classification, they have all been 3A and 4A schools and we will be opening up league play soon,” commented Mobley. “Our toughest game in our league will likely be Rangely, but we will be ready.”
The team lost to Glenwood Springs 7–8 Tuesday in a non-league game. Next on their schedule is another non-league away game in Basalt Tuesday, April 26.
