Editor’s Column: Queenly wisdom for all

However you feel about the British monarchy, the death of Queen Elizabeth II marks a historic milestone. Seventy years on the throne, through good times and bad, through personal, professional and political upheaval, is an accomplishment by any standard.

It is through the lens of history that we should view the conflicts of today, and so give us hope for tomorrow.

~ Queen Elizabeth II

The queen was 96 years old when she passed last week. She was just 25 years old when she was crowned. In 70 years she witnessed a great deal of history.

Her quote is a revelation I come back to frequently, especially when current events are tumultuous and tragic, as they often are.

Even in our small corner of the frontier, going through newspaper archives is a reminder of another popular quote: “There’s nothing new under the sun.” Knowing the generations that preceded ours endured chaos, calamity and conflict is a comfort, because statistically it means we’ll likely survive whatever current crisis we’re facing, too, even if it means history repeats itself and humans don’t learn from the errors of their forefathers.

As author Stephen King puts it, “Sooner or later, everything old is new again.”
