Meeker School Board updates: Theos resigns as golf coach; district enrollment sees a decline

MEEKER | The Meeker School Board held its regular meeting Monday night at the district office. Six board members attended in person, while Vice President Tom Allen joined via GoogleMeets.

The meeting began with an addition to the agenda: the resignation of Willy Theos, the Meeker High School Head Golf Coach. During the student celebrations, the board invited the boys golf team to acknowledge their successful season. Superintendent Chris Selle described it as a “banner year.”

“This was the first year we have qualified a team for the state tournament. We had three golfers qualify, and they finished in the top 10 as a team,” Selle said.

The team was composed of Mason Allen, Thomas Curry, Drew  rake, Alex Garcia, Sam Hightower, Montey Franklin, Wil Schwartz, Jacob Roberts, Bryson Pena, Gavin Allen, Dexter Chinn, Bryson Elam from Rangeley, Holt Pelloni and Kaden Ridgeway. Theos expressed pride in his team.

“I’m super proud of these kids. We qualified three for the State Golf Tournament, but that doesn’t take away from the others,” Theos said. He noted the contributions of all team members in preparing for the tournaments, highlighting their competitiveness against various divisions.

The team consisted of 14 golfers, with seven seniors and seven underclassmen. Theos compared this team to previous ones, noting their seriousness and dedication to improving their skills.

“My last year in the previous golf area, we had 16 golfers, but these guys were on a different level. They were serious about getting better, not just playing for fun,” he said. He credited his wife and Assistant Coach Donee Theos for her support, especially when he was unavailable at times during the season.

The board then reviewed committee reports. The District Advisory Committee met to discuss the Strategic Vision Document, focusing on its implementation in the schools. They will meet again next spring either in March or the month of April.

Principal reports highlighted the success of recent parent-teacher conferences last week.

This year at Barone Middle School Katie Johnston did an open house style for conferences with three teachers in commons while the rest of the teachers were in the gym.

“I think that it was okay, we had six sixth grade families that did not show up, 12 seventh grade families, and 20 eighth grade families so as they get older I do think we see less and less parents come just because they don’t need to check in as much,” Johnston said.

There were a couple of line items that were discussed, one that was put on the radar by Superintendent Chris Selle was that enrollment is down. He raised concerns about declining enrollment, stating, “We’re probably going to continue seeing declining enrollment in the coming years, but on the flip side attendance rates are up.”

The board approved the appointment of Ben Quinn as the assistant girls wrestling coach for the upcoming season. They briefly discussed a self-evaluation form, with plans to address it further at their work session in November. The meeting adjourned, and the next School Board session is scheduled for Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in the district office.
