So many of my conversations lately have involved the word freedom and how all of us come to different understandings of the word. Our individual right to “live free” is debated daily on the news. No matter if you get news from social media, television, or radio, it is someone who believes the rights accorded them by the Constitution are not being upheld. Even if one tries to avoid confrontation, eventually the statement “I believe in living free” comes out of someone’s mouth as they announce the end of their discourse. Their version of living free sometimes steps upon the rights of others. Most of the people who shout it out are able to put on their blinders and start bullying and name-calling anyone who obviously has a different interpretation of this important document.
All of the approximately 625 million acres that are managed by federal agencies, including the BLM, Forest Service, National Park Service, as well as the Fish and Wildlife service, are most likely now not just facing cutbacks but major changes in their administration. These are promised in both state and national governmental bureaus under the new leadership in the President’s cabinet appointments. In the past few years after the pandemic wreaked its havoc, some of the national parks were shut down temporarily and budgets cut, and now may face more severe restrictions and rules during the next four years.
Both Democrats and Republicans are worried about the political leanings of the candidates named to replace the past department heads, as it has always been assumed that this position requires an apolitical stance. This new administration is said to only care about the political party each candidate has been affiliated with previously, disregarding the years of education, expertise, and experience of each nominee. While both political parties are appearing to quibble over the President’s selections , the three attributes mentioned must be considered seriously before a confirmation goes through. It is essential that the candidate has become aware of the issues specific to their duties. We all deserve that.
