MEEKER | The Meeker High School girls basketball team’s season came to a close last week after a playoff loss to the Strasburg Indians on the road. The Cowboys, the No. 24 seed, fell 54-46 to the eighth-seeded Indians in the CHSAA Class 3A state playoffs.
Meeker kept the game competitive but ultimately fell short by eight points.
“Letting Strasburg get offensive rebounds—our issue all year long—was the deciding factor,” head coach Megan Shelton said. “We battled hard for all four quarters but were not able to outscore them.”
Shelton completed her first season as head coach with an 11-13 overall record. She shared the message she gave to her team in the locker room following the game.
“We had a successful season—new coaches, new players, low numbers—but still found a way to have a successful team,” Shelton said. “We learned and grew as a team.”
Meeker finished conference play with a 6-8 record, placing fourth in the 3A Western Slope League. Shelton expressed pride in what her team accomplished.
“I’m incredibly proud of what the girls were able to pull off this year,” she said. “Not too many people had high expectations, and probably shouldn’t have, with new coaches and a lot of new players on varsity.”
Reflecting on her first season, Shelton highlighted what she found most rewarding as head coach.
“The veteran players did a great job of welcoming the new players and the new coaches,” she said.
The Cowboys will graduate one senior, Taylor Garcia, who has been with the program for four years and will graduate in May. Congratulations on your accomplishment and thanks for all the work you’ve put in the last four years.
“Increased self-esteem and self-confidence from persevering and putting four years of work into this program—I hope that’s what she takes away from this experience,” Shelton said. “Taylor should be very proud of completing her basketball career and all the work she put in. We only got to spend one year with her, but we are very proud of who she is and what she’s done.”
With the season now over, the Cowboys will begin preparing for next year.
Congratulations to the team on a great 2024-25 basketball season, and as always, go Cowboys!
