Meeker boys’ basketball 14-0 with wins over Rangely and Cedaredge

MEEKER I The Meeker High School boys’ basketball team won both games over the weekend, but it took battling back against Rangely in the final quarter to get the win on Friday.

The Cowboys had to dig in and play outstanding team basketball to overcome the uncommon situation they found themselves in.
The Cowboys were only down one point, but the Rangely team had made scoring difficult for Meeker all evening. It took a fourth-quarter run and playing tenacious defense of their own to outscore the Panthers 11-5 in the final eight minutes and get the win.
Coach Klark Kindler said, “We have been getting off to slow starts lately and we need to get that fixed.” Regardless of the slow start, the Cowboys managed to make an outstanding comeback and keep their record untarnished.
They traveled to Cederedge on Saturday and beat a solid Bruin team.
The Cowboys came out to a 9-6 first quarter lead, but ended up tied at halftime.
Kindler said, “Defensively, I like what we have been doing. We have held teams to below 42 points in the last five games.”
It was defense that once again made the difference in this game as the Cowboys outscored the Bruins 14-11 in the third period and extended their lead with a huge final quarter, rolling to a final victory at 51-39.
Kindler said of the games coming up, “The important part of the year is coming up as we start to sort things out in the conference race, and we have five games in nine days. We need to focus on the task at hand.”
The task at hand has been winning and the Cowboys have seemed very focused on that. They proved this weekend that they can come from behind, and showed incredible composure in both games.
The boys host Hayden tonight with the junior varsity at 4:30 and the varsity at 7:30 p.m. and they travel to Paonia on Friday for junior varsity at 4 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
