Lark Craig of Danforth park was in town a few days ago and reports having killed a coyote in his house. The predatory roamer of the park wilds was first discovered in the parlor by Mrs. Craig, so Lark says, and he was called in, and Mr. Coyote was induced to move to the kitchen where the contents of a shotgun laid him low. Lark, leave off on that sassafras root you have been using for some time and return to buttermilk.

The high water of the past two weeks washed away the “dug-out” at the foot of Fifth street, once famous as the home of Calamity Jane when that celebrity made Meeker her place of residence. In those good old days — sixteen or seventeen years ago — Meeker was a place worth living in (not casting any reflections on our present up-to-date town and highly cultivated citizens and their conventional mode of existence) but to the old-timer the old ways had a peculiar attraction which he will always remember. Then a freedom of action was allowable which would not be considered “au fait” by our present, but more artificial standards of civilization, and as the old-timer looks back on the past he heaves a sigh of regret and silently observes to himself — “Things are not what they used to be.”

According to Davy Crockett the late rains were not required to ensure a good crop on Vinegar Flats.

Miss Alice Ellison and Edgar Peltier met with a serious auto accident Wednesday evening, in which it was almost a miracle that both of these young people escaped with only very minor injuries. Miss Ellison was driving Ed’s Ford coupe and just turned into the Flag Creek road where it joins the Mesa road at the town river bridge. The car had almost reached the top of the hill when it stalled and started to back down the short but rather steep incline. The young landy evidently became excited and lost control of the car and before Mr. Peltier could make a move the coupe backed over a twenty foot embankment into the river. The swift current of the White River at high water was carrying the wrecked machine into deeper water when Ed succeeded in smashing out the side window with his bare hands. Both occupants then crawled through the side window and stood on top of the coupe. Ed and the young lady were extremely fortunate in missing a watery grave.

State or county regulations — which do you prefer? The answer to that question is an obvious one these days, but as County Planning Chairman Davie Robertson said, “It’s a ritual we have to do.”

Energy ran high at meetings of coal mining and energy officials and representatives of state government as news of increased energy demands and lightened controls for power plant construction filled the air at the 2001 Northwest Colorado Coal Conference in Rangely and Craig last week.

Carlin Daggett might very well be on his way to becoming a scientist along with all his schoolmates who competed in the science fair at Meeker Elementary two weeks ago. Carlin won overall best of show.
